LOGOS SCHOOL UPDATE – 2010 – #2
General
Enrollment for 2011-12: We are currently accepting applications for the 2011-2012 school year. If you would like to add your child to the enrollment pool, applications can be found at http://logosprincipalspage.com/?cat=14 . A few applications have been submitted for next year’s preschool.
Friday: This Friday we will begin our normal pattern of wearing our dress uniforms. Sometimes it is tempting to want to slide into the weekend both mentally and physically. By dressing up we want to remind ourselves and each other to finish strong.
Elementary
Elementary Back to School Night: Please save this Friday, September 3 from 7:00 to 8:30 PM on your calendar. Back to School Night is a time to meet your child’s teacher and find out more about the school and class. This event is for parents only, please. Feel free to stay awhile afterward to enjoy fellowship and dessert!
Assembly Accompaniment Tryouts: 4th – 6th grade students are welcome to tryout to accompany singing at elementary assemblies. Tryouts will take place Thursday, September 16th @ 12:00 in the lunch room. Student accompanists receive one free hot lunch for every assembly they accompany. See Mr. Whitling for a copy of the two songs.
Secondary
Extra Curricular Activities & Attendance: With the first volleyball and cross country competitions right around the corner, this is a good time to clarify the guidelines for missed school work. If a student misses part of a day due to a planned extra-curricular event (leaving school early for an away game) all homework is still due that day and should be turned into his teacher’s box before departure. – Student/Parent Handbook
Secondary Back to School Night: On September 10 from 7:00-9:00 PM we will re-enact, in miniature, a secondary school day. This is an opportunity for parents to come and sit under the instruction of their child’s teachers as we move through all seven periods contained in a normal school day. Come and learn apologetics from Mr. Euhus, Classical Literature from Mrs. Merkle and PE from Mrs. Spencer and Mr. Whitling as we help provide a fuller picture of what your secondary student receives each day.

The park is 3 miles east of Moscow on Robinson Park Road.
Honors Designation: This year we will again be offering students in a select number of our upper level classes the option of completing advanced studies in order to receive the designation of “Honors” on their transcript. See the attachment for details.

New Afternoon Secretary: We are very pleased to announce that we have hired Miss Laura Shaw as our new afternoon secretary. She has been working in the office over the past few weeks and is off to a great start. Please be sure to stop by and welcome her to Logos.
Elementary and Secondary Class Registration: Registration for all Logos students will take place on August 16-17 between 7:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Please make time on one of these days for at least one parent to come by the front office for 15 minutes and register (students are not required to attend). This cannot be done over the phone or via email as there are certain forms (immunizations, emergency forms, etc.) that need to be signed and updated before the first day of school. All senior course choices must be provided at this time as well. If you are planning to be out of town during registration, please come ASAP later that week to register (no early registrations, please.).
School Day Upgrades: We have added 5 minutes to our 2nd period classes this year to allow for daily Bible reading in the secondary. By investing this time each day in each grade (plus a little extra in JH PE) our secondary students will read through the entire Bible between 7th and 12th grade. The elementary students currently read through the Bible between 2nd and 6th grade. This will fulfill the school board’s charge that Logos students read through the Bible at least twice before graduation. The timing change will result in the secondary day running from 8:25-3:20. The elementary day was slightly changed to 8:30-3:10 in order to balance the AM and PM proportion and to maintain consistency with the secondary pick-up times. We are excited about these changes and look forward to giving God’s Word an even more prominent place at Logos School.
Elementary
Elementary Music: We are very grateful to have Miss Allie Bradley back to teach our K-3rd grade music classes this year. She has also been hired to teach 4th grade music as well. Mr. Jonathan Erber has been hired to teach 5th and 6th grade music. Both Miss Bradley and Mr. Erber have been trained in the Kodaly music method and will be preparing our elementary students to work with Dr. Erb in the secondary.
Elementary PE: Our elementary PE program is staffed by volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering to help out by teaching your child’s PE class, please contact me this summer. Each PE class meets twice a week for 30 minutes. The following classes have volunteers: Preschool, Kindergarten and 4th Grade.
Secondary

Logos Science Teacher Conducts Summer Research
Wes Struble was selected to participate in the Teacher at Sea program this summer. Participants are assigned a cruise aboard one of NOAA’s 17 ships (or a chartered partner ship). NOAA conducts three main types of cruises. Fisheries research ships perform biological and physical science studies in support of fisheries research. Oceanographic and coastal research ships perform physical science studies in support of physical oceanography, atmospheric studies, and bathymetric mapping. Hydrographic survey ships scan the coastal sea floor with side-scan sonar and sophisticated bottom sounding systems to locate submerged obstructions and navigational hazards for the creation or update of the nation’s nautical charts. For specific log information and pictures of Mr. Struble click on the link below.

Study Tip of the Week
(Review, due to upcoming Finals)
Over the past couple years we have had a few questions about the school’s policy regarding keeping old tests for younger siblings to use in subsequent years. The short answer is, no. Students who have access to the previous year’s tests and answers have a distinct and unfair advantage over the other students in the class. Teachers, both in the elementary and secondary, provide review sheets before each test. This is what the students should use (along with notes, previous work, etc.) as they prepare for tests. At Logos, using someone else’s old test to study for your test is cheating.
